Oregano is the most widespread species of the Origanumgenus. The main active ingredient of oregano is essential oil, and depending on the place of origin, time of harvest, and genetic factors, it may have a different chemical composition.

Essential oil contains dozens of active substances, several of which give it unique properties and these are considered to be the main active substances. This leads to different chemotype variations of oil from wild oregano depending on what the main active ingredient is (carvacrol, sabinene, linalool, p-cymene, thymol, etc.) with different physicochemical parameters and hence different properties.

The most thoroughly studied variant of oil is the carvacrol chemotype (high content of carvacrol, low content of thymol) derived from the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean. The effectiveness and properties of this oil result mainly from the presence of carvacrol and thymol in appropriate proportions.
